And it starts

I got my first birthday present in the mail today!  Woo hoo!  I am not ashamed to admit it: I am a grown woman who loves her birthday and loves receiving presents.  Just call me Sally.  When it comes to my birthday I am all, "gimme gimme gimme, get, get, get".

I am pretty sure who sent this to me, but there was no note...a mystery...  (I really wanted to read this, yay!)

I am thrilled to have been made aware of kelp noodles during this Paleo eating year.  It's pretty nifty on its own merits (a whole food preserved with a salt derived from seaweed, shelf stable for six months, a fun crunchy texture, a raw food which requires no cooking, flavorless...absolutely no fishy/briny-ness), but for someone looking for an alternative to "regular"/rice/corn/quinoa pasta?  This stuff is a game changer.

One of the tastiest plates of cold sesame noodles I've ever had was at a Winter Faire at one of the Waldorf Schools the kids went to for preschool or Kindergarten in Sacramento.  The recipe was reprinted in the school newsletter and I have held onto my clipping for years despite the fact that we no longer cooked/prepared gluten noodles (or anything) at home.

I made cold sesame noodles with rice noodles once and it was a disaster.  I may have made them with rice pasta once.  I held onto the recipe even as it became more clear that it was unlikely I'd ever make this dish again.  That's how good this recipe was.

Enter kelp noodles.  The first time, Cap prepared them because my back was hurting.  He followed the recipe I had found on Elana's Pantry.  It was good.  I will be forever grateful for the introduction to kelp noodles.  Also, for nudging me into my first foray with ume plum vinegar.  This week, I made the noodles with the Winter Faire recipe.  Oh my.  So, so good.  I'm sorry I don't have time to type out the recipe right now.  I will someday.

(The photo above is how they looked right out of the fridge as leftovers.  I could have waited for them to get creamier as they warmed to room temp, but I was hungry.  Still tasty.)

I flipped through my recipe book this morning to start thinking about what I want to make for my birthday party.  A small cozy of friends will come over for a potluck.  I came across this recipe for grain-free, sugar-free, vegan cookies and realized I could use up another of the ripe bananas.  These are comforting, lovely cookies.  A great recipe.

Peace and love.

Purple goodness

I do love purple.  My SIL gave me some squishy and sparkly purple yarn for my birthday.

I spent much of the weekend knitting the blanket.  (Not purple.)  And while it was satisfying, this kind of longterm knitting does take on a sloggy feel to it, for me.  You can't quite completely take the ADDish need for instant gratification out of this girl, as it turns out.

So, late last night, I cast on the purple for a scarf.  And this evening, I wove in the ends.  That super bulky yarn will knit up right quick for you, hear?

I love the sparklies.  For real.  But, I don't love the feel of the 51% acrylic.  Especially when it's paired with mohair which I am coming to realize is not a favored fiber of mine.  No worries.  I can easily wear this not directly on my skin.

I am looking to steam block it.  (Kelly, do you have a steam iron I can borrow?)  Blocking, like swatching, is an aspect of knitting I have yet to embrace very fully. But, these leaves curl slightly and blocking would likely help flatten them, making them more visually prominent.  If the yarn was wool, it'd be a no brainer to block.  But, word is that acrylic is blockable if done carefully (ie. don't stick the iron on those plastic filaments!)

Purple goodness.  Love it.

My honey, my chef

Cap made us a lovely birthday dinner.  Sugar-, casein- and grain-free, of course.

 turkey kebabs.

 salmon patty cakes.

 roasted broccoli and bacon.

coconut custard and dark chocolate truffles.

you rock, Cap.  thank you ♥

Happy happy

It's my birthday!  (I love my birthday.)

It has been a wonderful day and I am, indeed, very happy.

I have been enveloped in birthday greetings from near and far.  (One of my favorite things about Facebook is receiving so many sweet wishes from friends there.)

This morning we woke late, but opted to get dressed quickly and head over to Raymond's.  Sadly, there was no corned beef hash, but it was a pleasure hanging out there with the family.  I especially appreciated Gem's breakfast of two sides of bacon and a lemonade.

Then we zipped over to see Anthony at the Farmer's Market.  I was delighted he had eggs left.  I also picked up ground sirloin and ground lamb for the week.

I dropped the boy off at home and went to Vinny for a special birthday TCM session.  Sooooo good.  I was treated to my own private northern lights-behind-my-eyelids type of light show (purple figured prominently and influenced me later in the yarn shop).  The energy work was insane.  At one point I felt like I knew what it will feel like to die.  I was a little scared wondering if I was, indeed, dying, but overall it was amazing and insightful and peaceful.

I was home for a bit and then went out with Donna.  We went to Stix N Stitches (her first time).  It felt great to back there.  I can feel my knitting mojo coming back little by little.  I found a lovely and will search Ravelry for a hat pattern for myself.  This shop is great and has a very cool owner.  You get a onetime 20% discount during your birthday month.  She's starting a sale tomorrow so gave me that discount, too.  The balance of a gift certificate Danielle gave me for my birthday a couple of years ago covered today's purchase.

We went to a new cafe in town and I had a satisfyingly salty Cobb salad chock full of bacon bits and blue cheese (it's that time of the month).

I thought we might browse in the bookstore (the one with used books is in the vicinity of the yarn shop), but Cap and the kids gave me my gift right before I left and I didn't feel the need after that!

I've been relaxing with Lula as the day grew dark.  Cap's been cooking up a storm in the kitchen and the kids have been playing and blogging and watching Mythbusters.

Maybe a movie or some games after dinner.  It doesn't matter what we do, it has been a day overflowing with goodness and love.  I am utterly sated.

Birthdayzilla

It's true.  I am.

I love my birthday.  And I tend to be very particular about how I want to celebrate it.

Universe bless Cap, that's for sure.  This is the twenty-second time he's beside me (and not beside himself) to celebrate.

In other words, he's taking orders suggestions.  O.o

The last two years I've had dinner parties for me and my friends, essentially banishing my three boys from our home while I partied.  This year I did not feel the same urge.

My actual birthday is Saturday this year.  There is definitely something nice about having the whole day.  My thoughts so far...

• breakfast at Raymond's (I have been craving corned beef hash for months)

• a birthday appointment with Vinny

• farmer's market

• a movie out...alone or with a friend

• the dinner menu I am requesting: Turkey Kebabs (Primal Blueprint Cookbook), Salmon Patty Cakes (PBC), Baked Coconut Milk Custard (PBC), Chocolate Truffles (PBC) and Nom Nom Paleo's Roasted Broccoli and Bacon.

• game night with my boys

Yup.  I dream big and live large when it comes to my birthday.

Haircut

Even just a trim to deshaggify feels good.  I loves me my Traci at Bangz.  I decided to be fiscally responsible and not color my hair this time.  Color this Summer!

The birthday celebrating has begun.  I got my first prezzie in the mail.  An album memorializing our trip to Barcelona.  Love.

Peace and love.

Sagittarius is 10

It's always such a treat to look back in photos.  (I missed a chunk from the end of Sacramento/beginning of NJ...those digital pics are on an external hard drive somewhere...)

He was born into water after a peaceful labor.  When the doula walked into the birth center, she heard my laughter come floating down the stairs.

He used to love holding a little toy in his hand.  He nursed till he was three, the sling was his preferred mode of travel while he was two, and he was talking by one.

He has always been easily absorbed by the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures that surround him...as well as the music, thoughts, questions and imagination within him.

He doesn't know what it is like to not have a twin-like companion in life.  These two have always gotten along.  Always.

He lives life fully and feels everything intensely.  When he laughs, it's like huge rays of sunshine.  When he cries, it's like deep churning midnight blue.  When he yells, it's red hot lava.  To know him is to adore him, but it is also to feel a little unnerved.  He is powerful stuff.

I feel lucky to know him, every day.  Happy birthday, Sagittarius ♥

Cabin fever

...is the name of our newest book.  A birthday gift, hand delivered, hot off the press.  The delicious laughter erupting from where he was devouring this lovingly anticipated book drew me...

Speaking of books, hearing about this today made me ineffably sad.  Such an act of cowardice and such an incredible waste.

Early celebration

Sag's birthday is coming up.  Number 10.  Because of scheduling issues we decided to have his "friends" birthday celebration today.  It was a wonderful time...he is blessed with great friends.  I'm going to let the photos do the talking...I am pooped and heading to bed with the boys.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

Two days ago I started a second post about flow that I couldn't finish.  Maybe I will later today.

Yesterday was supposed to be a beach day (celebrating a common meal friend's birthday), but Sag had a stomachache and fever so it turned into a quiet, healing day.

Gem caught up in his Math (he expressed satisfaction and pride in a way that, upon reflection, he doesn't often get the opportunity to) and scored an 89% on the chapter test (I joked with him that that was an 'Asian F'...he didn't get it...anyone else watch Glee? ;-)

I finished 100 Cupboards, a YA novel that Daniel recommended.  I loved it.  I have put in a request to the library for the second book (it's a trilogy).  I nursed some GI difficulty myself later on in the day.

Sag took it easy.  He played on the iPad, he played Minecraft (it took some perseverance, but we figured out how to upload the latest pre-release update), and he strummed on his electric guitar (a child size one we gave him a few years ago).

We enjoyed a cozy evening watching Ice Age for the first time.  It was funny and delightful.

This morning we have already been food shopping and are nestling in for the rest of the day.  Sag's almost completely better, my gut showed itself to still be sensitive while we were out and Gem's system seems to be holding it together for now (after a slightly fragile evening).

It's tough to really sink into Dragon's Way while tending to two kids sans partner.  But, I have continued with the walnuts and honey breakfast, have cut out coconut juice entirely and am drinking only herbal tea with honey.  I've been finishing off the leftovers I've had in the fridge that don't conform to the guidelines (ie. the chimichurri is raw, the ground pork I cooked up mid-week).

Tomorrow, I will transition more completely to Level 1 food.

I mentioned I was hungry in my last post.  I realized later on that day that despite feeling "hungry" (and, really, just the awareness of hunger feels like "hunger" to me because I am so unaccustomed to that feeling...) I had plenty of energy.  I went about my morning and was very productive, very much in flow.  No weakness, no dizziness, etc.

After eating a more substantial lunch, I was tired!

It's almost as if I also don't recognize this more quiet energy as "energy" yet.  The more frenetic, buzz of energy that I recognize, is an ultimately tiring kind of energy...  Interesting...I am relearning what it is to feel certain, authentic and primal things.

One of the things I've never quite gotten my head around is how Master Lu talks about eating until 70% full.  The ability to sense this accurately feels completely foreign to me.  People can do that?!  But, this time (I think this is the third time I am doing DW), I am beginning to see that I can feel something between "hungry" and "full"...and that I can achieve this after eating.

I don't eat slowly enough to really feel it while I'm eating yet.  But, I can definitely manipulate how much I eat, visually and mentally, to put me on course to eat till I am 70%ish full.  I can still feel the pulling on my mind that what I see on my plate is not "enough" food.  But, the calm in my mind is stronger now and I eat and then I feel...satisfied.

When the calm is pushed into the background and I have my mind on things like finishing food off, like the loaf of Paleo bread that finally came out without being undercooked in the center, which I do not want to throw away, but I don't want to freeze it either...or my mind is whirled about in a dance of creative fantasy and I think the leftover ground pork needs to be nestled in sautéd shallots and softly scrambled pastured eggs...as they say in Project Runway, my editing skills are railroaded...and I feel stuffed...I go over the top.

And, as I mentioned above, I feel tired afterward.  (As my digestive system churns up my energy to work on the overload of food.)

Things are better, though.  When I'm tired, I am not tired for as long as I used to be.  I am also not as completely tired.  It can feel global, but after some rest, I am able to move on much more quickly than before.

I am sleeping so much better.

My moods, which can still pop up or down unpredictably, regulate much smoother and quicker after those rushes or dips.

I am keeping an eye out on the numbers on the scale.  I don't need the number to tell me whether I am feeling good or not, but dropping the number on the scale has been a part of this experiment for me from the start (the numbers of my blood work, too...for my next birthday, in January, I am planning on having a meeting with our family doc to see where all my numbers are).

The plateau is over and I have dropped five more pounds.  Breaking the 160 barrier was something.  I was about 160 when I became pregnant, both times.  I've been in close vicinity of 160 most of my adult life.  Times I've traveled above that have been stress times, times I've sunk below that have been stress times, too.

When I began this latest experiment of modifying what I eat/do, I was above 160 (by 15).  My blood numbers (most recently taken three+ years ago) were elevated, too.

Going to Barcelona, in May, opened my eyes to the fact that I was, at core, stronger than I would have expected.  I withstood ten days of international travel (crossing time zones, very little sleep/jet lag, lots of walking despite normally being sedentary, different eating/food routines) with no issues.  No aches or pains, no GI problems.

When I turned 40, I embraced the beginning of the rest of my life.  Now, at 45, I am grabbing consciousness close and sculpting myself...inside and out, to better enjoy the rest of my days.

I am grateful to be experiencing some very real changes.  Thanks for being a part of it, with me.

Peace and love.

Turning it up to eleven

It's been a bit like Christmas morning here...Sag has been up since 4am unable to tame his excitement.

Gem is 11.  Very interesting how 10 is such a milestone year, but 11 feels...exponentially "more".  My 11 year old woke me with the gentlest of kisses.  Any kiss is a rarity from him.  My day was made sometime before 7am as I rose into consciousness through pure love.

A lucky being am I.

Happy birthday to my Gemini...may life continue to unfold for you as you unfold to it...with calm curiosity, unerring certitude in truth and justice, a gentle touch, a generous dose of tolerance and the laughter that streams out of you like an effervescent melody...the sweetest snippet of song I have ever known.
