I just color coded my Google calendar (through December) and found the experience unexpectedly and extraordinarily satisfying.
My 9 calendars in 1:
Me - light red
Chores - tangerine
Company - pink
Cap - dark blue
Errands - sea green (anyone remember that old school Crayola color?)
Family Activity - purple
Kids stuff - grassy green
Cap and me time - dark red
Special days (birthdays and the like) - lavender

I color code my work calendar (meetings, production projects, out of office, etc.). It really works well for me. It more bright and lively. It's seems funny when I see someone else's and it's just black and white.
I experience it as bright and lively, too. That's a great way of putting it :-)

I think it might be a newish feature... I don't remember the option when I first started using the Calendar, but I just kind of stumbled upon this now, so it may be that I was just clueless about it before...
I love it!
